16 Days . . . . . .

I’m in the Blogosphere!

Wow – I never thought of myself as a “blogger”.  This blog site is in it’s infancy and will be a work in progress.  The purpose of this blog is simply to help others.  I will start at the beginning.  I am 52 (almost 53) years old.  In 2008, I had thyroid cancer and a total thyroidectomy.   Shortly after that, the manufacturing plant that I was enjoying a wonderful career at, decided to relocate to Georgia, then eventually shut down.  Always being a healthy person – not overweight, exercising daily, I decided to not let this impact my daily living.  I continued to exercise and eat healthy.  However, I was gaining weight!  After about 8 months of this, I was impacted!  I began to give up.  Then the weight really piled on.  I stopped exercising.  I started eating organic,  felt a tiny bit better, but still had the weight.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but now I can see that I was slipping into depression.  I had some odd jobs, but not a career.  I became lazy and gained at least 65 lbs.  My face always looked bloated.  I was always hot.  I couldn’t stand seeing pictures of myself.  Heck, I hated looking in the mirror!  This was the case up until mid May of 2012.  Then my son (after MANY discussions), talked me into trying a juice fast.  But, not any old juice fast.  This one included incorporating almond milk, vegetable broth, and herb teas.  Suddenly, it didn’t sound quite as daunting.  My son and daughter-in-law joined me for a good part of the juice fast.  I will start a new post to advise how the juice fast went and my plan to help others.

Working on the Longest Fast Yet!

I believe I’m on my 6th or 7th juice fast over the past year.  It has become habit for me (thankfully).  I’m on Day 11 right now.  Usually, by Day 11 I’m looking forward to stopping in a few days.  Not this time.  I’m planning to go 19 or 20 days.  This will be my longest yet.  I feel good and motivated.  Wish me luck!

A Great INEXPENSIVE Juicer!!!

Over the past year, my son and I have been sharing his Omega Juicer.  It’s close to $400.  During my current juice fast (day 8 – thank you), he couldn’t loan it to me because he was planning his own fast.

My daughter loves her JE2200B Black and Decker Juicer.  She bought it at Macy’s for $50.  For this fast, I had to get one in a hurry and didn’t have a lot of money.  They had it on sale online at Macy’s for $39.99.  But I didn’t have time for that.  I went to my local Macy’s and they had it on sale for $23.00!  Of course they were out.  I was able to order it at the store and have it shipped priority mail.  Such a deal!  Best of all – I love it!  I actually like it more than the Omega!  It does a great job of separating and it’s super easy to take apart and clean.  The Omega jams up sometimes – not the Black and Decker.  juicer

It has over 500 reviews on Amazon and is 4 out of 5 stars.

So if anyone is hesitating because of the price of juicers, please check out the Black and Decker.

Day 1 (Again)

Without a thyroid, there’s a constant battle of the bulge.  Therefore, I will be juicing at least quarterly.  The more you can juice, the better, so I don’t see this as a negative.  There should be a small group juicing with me this time.  My old friend, Julie, her husband, Trey, one of my co-workers, and hopefully my nail lady.  I’m getting my nails done today, so we’ll see.  Shooting for 14 days, but may stop at 13 so that I can transition back to food on a day off.  Julie brought up a good question about working out while juicing.  If you are water fasting, working out is difficult.  If your juice fasting, working out is amazing.  I work out better while juice fasting and feel so much lighter while doing so.  I’m very excited for this juice fast.  My daughter has been in town since Easter and we’ve dined out way too much.  She leaves today – perfect timing!  When she gets home, she’ll be starting another juice fast as well.  I’ll update within a week and let you know how it’s going.

Okay – so it’s not “my way,” it’s really based on the book by Steven Meyrowitz – Juice Fasting and Detoxification.

I realize that I have information all over this blog about juice fasting.  I want to make this entry one that puts it all in one place.

Step 1 – Schedule a time that sets you up for success.  A time that lacks in social obligations, vacations, company, etc.

Step 2 – Ideally, start on a day off.  If you can, start on a day you don’t work so you can take your time preparing.  Also, it’s good to see how it affects your system.

Step 3 – Go shopping at your local health food store.  Load up on produce.  Make sure to get plenty of carrots and cucumbers.  Those two items are typically inexpensive and make a good base for any juice.  Then buy what ever you want to add – spinach, cilantro, beets, kale, celery, etc.  Go heavy on veggies and light on fruit (if any).  If you add beets, they’re great for you, but a little goes a long way.  Make sure everything is organic.  Purchase lots of nut milks (coconut milk is fine, too).  You can even splurge on a little chocolate flavored (heat it up for hot chocolate at night!)  You can also buy little 4 packs of almond milk that you can take to work with you.  Pick up some organic broths and herb teas.  Pick up organic apple juice (or apples) and lemon juice.

Step 4 – Make juice every day.  I drink about 20 oz a day.  Don’t overdo it or you’ll burn out.    When juicing, at the end add an organic apple or about 1/2 cup of apple juice and 1 TBS of lemon juice.  The apple juice and lemon juice help the  flavor.  STRAIN IT!  Always strain your juice to be sure you get no fiber in your system.  The goal is to completely shut down your digestive system.  Try to drink almost immediately so that the enzymes have their full effect.

Step 5 – During your first three days, drink as much nut milk you need to get through that period.  I’ll be honest, the first 3 days tend to be HELL!  After three days, cut back on the nut milk to 2-4 servings a day.

Step 6 – try to continue for two weeks, no less than 10 days.  By day 7 you’ll be riding high. Feeling better than ever!

Another Big Juice Fast

So today I’m embarking on another juice fast.  I plan to go no less than 10 days.  I’m even starting a new job in a couple days, but not going to let that get in the way.  If anything, I believe I’ll have a clearer mind and it will be a benefit.  I’m trying to help a few others who seem to be ready.  The first step is the hardest.  Having support of others helps.  If you don’t have support at home, let me know and I’d be happy to help any way that I can.  I will keep you posted on the progress of this juice fast.  Time to juice!

Raw, Unfiltered Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

I can’t tell you how amazing this stuff is – but I’ll try.  This bottle that I buy at my health food store for $3.15 lasts about a month.  Take a tablespoon in a pint glass of purified or distilled water morning and night.  Here are some of amazing uses:

  • Miracle cure for high blood pressure patients.  Organic Apple Cider Vinegar acts very fast, and you will start seeing a difference in your blood pressure within a week with it. You do not need any other medication for high blood pressure with apple cider vinegar.
  • Next time you suffer from a bladder infection or UTI, take this morning and night.  It wipes it out almost immediately (I know first hand!)
  • Put small amount in a bowl and mix with equal parts water and use to remove make up or as a toner.  Gives your skin a nice glow.
  • 1 tablespoon mixed in 4 ounces of purified water after a meal has been used as a natural remedy for heartburn and as a replacement for toxic heartburn medications.  Great for acid reflux as well.
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar may help improve bowel irregularity, thereby removing toxins from the body at a faster rate.
  • Helps clear up skin conditions and blemishes giving a smoother texture and complexion.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar helps to break down fats so that your body can use them rather than store them. For this reason, many diets include ACV in their regimen.
  • Stuffy nose or sinus problems?  Add some Apple Cider Vinegar to a pot of steamy water and inhale.  Do this as often as necessary.
